Valheim Server Performance Tuning Guide
Optimize your MANAfuel Valheim server for smooth gameplay with world management, instance count control, and build optimization tips.
Understand Valheim Server Architecture
Valheim servers are zone-based — the server only simulates areas where players are present. An empty server uses minimal resources. Performance degrades when multiple players explore different areas simultaneously, forcing the server to simulate many zones at once. Large builds with hundreds of instances (torches, furniture, building pieces) in a single zone are the primary performance drain.
Monitor Performance in Your Dashboard
Open your server panel in the MANAfuel dashboard. The performance metrics show real-time CPU usage, memory consumption, and network throughput. Valheim servers on the Gamer plan (8 GB) handle 6 to 8 concurrent players exploring different zones comfortably. If you see CPU spikes correlating with specific player activity, Bob identifies the zone and player involved.
Manage World Size and Exploration
Valheim worlds are procedurally generated as players explore. More explored territory means more data the server must track. For long-running worlds, consider resetting distant unexplored regions using world editing tools uploaded via the File Manager. Focus your community on a central area rather than encouraging everyone to explore in different directions simultaneously.
Optimize Large Builds
The single biggest performance issue in Valheim is massive builds. Each building piece, torch, and comfort item is a simulated instance. A base with 500+ instances causes frame drops for every player in that zone. Encourage your community to use fewer but larger structural pieces, minimize smoke-producing items (campfires, kilns), and spread builds across multiple zones rather than concentrating everything in one mega-base.
Configure Server-Side Settings
Valheim has limited server-side configuration compared to other games. The main tunable settings are in the server launch parameters. On MANAfuel, adjust these through your server settings panel. Key parameters include world name, server password, crossplay toggle, and save interval. The default save interval (every 20 minutes) is a good balance — more frequent saves increase disk I/O without meaningful benefit.
